do lawn gas trimmer idle without shutting off?

with mine , it turns off when i dont hit the throttle
is that normal?
and its less than a day old

No, that is not normal. It should idle. The problem is either the low speed adjustment is set too low or the clutch is clogged with dirt, causing the engine to stall.
Turn the idle adjustment screw on the carburetor out about a quarter turn. Check your manual for which is the idle adjustment
If the clutch is clogged up, you will need to take it to a small engine shop because it has to be disassembled and cleaned.

How do you mix gas & oil for weed eater?

I need to know what kind of oil and how much of each. I no longer have my husband to do this. It is a Featherlite brand.

You can buy a container of 2 cycle engine oil at WalMart. It has instructions for the correct ratio for a 1 gallon container. Check the instruction manual or web for the correct oil/gasoline ratio (40:1) gas to oil 35:1 etc) for the weedeater you have. Pour the indicated amount into a plastic one gallon fuel container (available at same place) then fill with gasoline. Shake it up a bit and pour it into the weed eater and you are good to go.
