All the things which made the Honda Fireblade the fastest around the track and our favourite 1000cc superbike last year still ring true. The Honda is still impossibly easy to jump on and ride fast, being smooth, beautifully balanced and predictable, with superb handling.

It was another bike that needed lots of tweaking to get it to behave around the circuit, mainly through controlling the damping at each end to stabilise it under acceleration and braking. The only real limit to its cornering ability is the pegs, which go down easily with these sticky Michelin Power One tyres fitted.

The Honda Fireblade is a very comforting bike to be on, once set up, and will make the perfect trackday bike. It never does anything nasty and is constantly re-assuring you, giving you lots of feedback and confidence.

While the Ducati is a serious track tool and feels the most like a proper race machine out of all the bikes here, and the Kawasaki ZX-10 is a precision tool for carving out fast lap times, the Fireblade is just fun. You feel like riding round and round until the fuel runs out. And remember, it cleaned up in last year's National Superstock Championship, too.

Fourth position in this test doesn't really do the Blade justice, but the stop watch is a cruel mistress. Compared to the Yamaha R1, it's too slow out of corners to keep up and the engine feels too buzzy and frantic.

It's hard to believe the Honda is way down in races, but by no means does that mean it's become rubbish overnight, because it hasn't. It's still a gem of a motorcycle.

Electrical: How do I replace 3 (120 Volt) landscape lights with low voltage lights - is this a job for a pro?

I have already purchased my new lights but just today learned about the voltage variance (what I have now is 120V, need to move to low voltage). I'd like to use the existing underground wiring for the new lights, if this is possible. Can a layman easily install a transformer on the existing line and plug the new low volt lights into the heavy power cable already in place? ...or is this too much of a job to bite off for a guy juggling overcommitted weekend schedules and soccer coaching?

Not at all, those lights are pretty much available anywhere, get them at Lowes and Home Depot.
The come with a transformer, that you plug into a regular 120 volt outlet. Then you just lay out the lights, they usually come in either four or six packets, some contain more. Then you, use the wiring wire that comes with the kit, and lay it where you wish the lights to go. Then you simply assemble the lights, all snap in parts, and attach a press in connector to the wire you laid out. That's it, usually comes with a timer too.

Radio Controlled Boats come in all shapes and sizes. But the top-of-the-line performers in terms of speed and performance are the gas boats. These boats come with full engines that can really crank out speed. Since the engines are larger to accommodate the gas/oil mixture tanks, the boats themselves are larger, sometimes up to 5 feet long. There are pros cons to owning these boats so let's review a few of them. Price. Gas boats tend to be more expensive than either their electric or nitro brethren, often times topping $1,000. However, the devil is in the details. The gas is cheaper to purchase than the nitro-methane mixture required in nitro boats. Also, the gas boats will run longer on a tank of gas. So over the long term, the boats may actually turn out to be a less expensive alternative than the nitro models. Performance. These boats are heavier and have design efficiencies built into them to be able to handle rougher water surfaces. Where lighter nitro boats may not be able to handle wakes without flipping, gas boats will often times slice right through them with ease. Hull designs and stabilizing features make this a boat built for continuous performance at high speeds. Water Space Requirements. Make no mistake.

You must have a larger body of surface water to be able to operate these models efficiently. Ponds, pools and really small water bodies won't cut it. They simply move too fast! Lakes and in some cases ocean racing are ideal. This rule is particularly true for competitive racing. Product Availability. Whereas the lower tier toy grade and electric rc boat models have a lot of manufacturers offering plenty of product availability, the higher performing models really are limited to a few manufacturers. They are Megatech, Traxxas and Venom. There are certainly others, but these three deliver the broadest product offerings. Maintenance. The gas boats, like the nitro counterparts, must be maintained. There engine parts must be tended to and replaced when necessary. Also, depending on where you operate your gas boats, they may need to be tuned accordingly. Operating on lake surfaces at altitude will require special tuning for peak efficiency, just like a full sized speed boat. Noise. This is an unfortunate by product of the gas boats. They are loud, which is why often times a larger body of water will help dissipate the noise. They need to be operated within allowable noise ordinances and with a view towards polite sharing of outdoor water bodies.

Skill. Gas boats require a level of skill to handle them. The combination of size and speed can be potent in the wrong hands. Certainly some experience with hobby grade electric models is warranted before stepping at the controls of one of these finely tuned boats. However, once mastered, the experience is unmatched. A lot of serious rc boat enthusiasts prefer the gas boats to either nitro or electric due to the performance that can be squeezed out of these boats. The fuel is easy to get your hands on and over the long haul will be cheaper to operate. Price is a valid concern and these boats should be considered investments and not one time shots at having fun only to be shelved and never use again.
