TechMan: Antique tractors continue to have pull with farmers
There are certain technologies people just use: their television or their toaster, for example. But other technologies invoke passion. The classic example is the car.

Many of us own used tractors for various reasons, investment potential, and a raft of other reasons unrelated to agriculture. Often, if a collector did not grow up on a farm, the model they want to purchase is a model their granddad owned, and they remember taking rides on it during summer.
The first thing to do before setting out to purchase your used tractor is to draw up your list of requirements, i.e. what you want your use tractor to do. Don't rush in to compiling your list of requirements, take a little time to consider it carefully, use this opportunity to read a lot of similar articles on the subject, meet with other farming friends and tractor owners and visit some vintage tractor shows and talk with others there, people who have already purchased a used tractor and are happy to share their knowledge with you. They are often, only two prepared to assist another collector to meet their dreams.
You need to plan the work you need to carry out with your used tractor. If you plan to cultivate row crops, for example you probably won't be too happy with a Ford N Series tractor or an Oliver Super 55 since both are low power tractors with low ground clearance. Similarly, if you are planning to pull a 10-foot disc harrow you will not be too pleased with a Farmall cub or an Allis-Chalmers G.
There are numerous things that you should look out for when deciding on which tractor to purchase. Here are the top most common things to watch out for:
1. Is there Low oil supply, in this case the solution is simple; just fill oil to proper level.
2. Dip the oil and if you find that the oil too heavy, then what you need to do is dilute the oil and change to proper weight oil.
3. Remove the filter and check if it is dirty. What you need to do in this case is clean and replace filter element, ideally with a part.
4. Is the suction line too small, if this is the case the solution is relatively easy - simply increase size of suction line in the engine block.
5. Examine the suction line and check to see if it is restricted or partially clogged, if so remove restriction in suction line with an air compressor.
