Imported from Japan to the western world is the Koi pond. Koi are a form of carp fish that look like giant, majestic goldfish. When these fish are added to a beautiful and artistically crafted pond, Koi can truly make the exterior of a property look incredible. Of course, building the pond is not enough. The pond – and the Koi that inhabit it – must be maintained for longevity.
For Koi to survive and thrive they will need a water environment that is conducive for their survival. For this it is helpful to have water test kits that tell you the basic parameter readings of your pond such as pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as these readings are critical so that you can monitor the levels of toxins in your water. For example, a pond should contain no more than .5 ppm of ammonia (with as close to 0 as possible) and no more than .25 ppm. Other testers to monitor the dissolved oxygen levels can also be helpful.
Properly feeding Koi is paramount for their lifespan as well. Most assume this means to avoid feeding the Koi infrequently or too little. Such an assessment is accurate. However, it is also important to avoid over feeding them. Actually, over feeding Koi is often more harmful than underfeeding them. This is because the more food they are fed the more waste they will produce. If too much waste is produced in the pond, ammonia levels will rise to a point where the water becomes toxic.
Then again, even when the Koi are properly fed attention still must center on the levels of ammonia and other impurities in the water. This is why filtration systems are critical. Everyone who owns a Koi pond knows this and installs a filter. Installation, however, is not enough. One also needs to select the right size filter for the appropriate size pond. Also, it is critical to make sure the filter is actually working. If a broken filter goes unnoticed for even a short period of time can prove catastrophic. There are other products that are necessary for cleaning a Koi pond. Leaf rakes and cleaning brushes are a must in the storage areas of anyone with a Koi pond.
