Each Christmas my father would carefully unpack his model railroad and set it up around the base of the Christmas tree until January 1st, when he would pack it away until the following year. He eventually decided that there was just too much fun to be had with model train and it became a permanent fixture in our basement.
Every enthusiast knows that one of the most important steps in building the perfect railroad, is the benchwork. This is the foundation that supports the entire layout and so it must be strong and structurally stable. My father built his own, but this is not necessary nowadays as benchwork kits are available, which are precut and predrilled. If you ever wanted to re-site your set up, the kits are easily dismantled and that is another advantage.
So if you have weighed up the advantages and the disadvantages for both options and decided that the do it yourself option is the one for you, the first step is creating the basic layout. Space restrictions must be taken into consideration and also would you perhaps want to expand the basic design at a later stage. Remember that your benchwork will be expected to withstand a substantial amount of weight without buckling under the pressure. A 3/8 or ½ inch thick piece of plywood should be adequate for a good, strong platform. If there is the possibility that you may wish to move your benchwork at a later date, simply cut the plywood into several pieces before you put the structure together.
Now you need to decide the finer points of the design. Will you want more than one level? If your train derailed, how easy would it be to gain access to pop it back on the track? Will the height of the railroad be correct to ensure your comfort when operating? Take your time looking at different designs and layouts before making your final decision.
If you prefer the smaller scale trains, select scenery with more detail, such as small rock formations, trees and people. But if the large scale locomotives are your thing, then go for the dramatic landscapes with large mountain ranges and expansive horizons. This is the time to let your imagination off the leash and really have some fun. this is the world of model railroads.
