How to achieve a slow shutter speed for waterfall pics?
My Nikon D80 manual gives an example of a fast shutter speed at 1/1600 S and a slow shutter speed at 1s for taking a waterfall pics.
When I view the control panel it doesn't give me an option to set my exposure to 1s.
The only options I have are various numbers with a small "o" following it. For example: 1o, 13, 15, 2o, 25, 3o, 4o, 5o, 6o, 7o, 8o, 1oo, 125, 16o, 2oo, and so on.
I've been taking decent portraits and landscape pics, however I'm wanting to get better waterfall pics but I'm having trouble trying to get a slow shutter speed. Any advice on what I could be doing wrong? This is my 1st DSLR. I moved up from many point and shoots and have had my camera for a few weeks. Thanks for any advice you may have.
In manual mode, set the shutter speed with the rear command dial and the aperture with the front. As you turn the rear dial clockwise, you will count down towards slower speeds. When the number displayed has a " after it, you are in the seconds. So 1" is one second, and 2.5" is two and a half seconds and so on until you reach bulb. Also choose your lowest ISO, (100) on the D80.
For silky waterfall pictures, you will need to shoot on a tripod at dawn or dusk unless the waterfall is in dense shade or under very heavy overcast. Or you can use neutral density filters to cut down the amount of light passing through. Use a small aperture (f/16 or smaller) Fast flowing water will make silk at about a second, slower moving water may take a few seconds to get the effect you want. Just experiment. Here is a link to a one second exposure taken in the shade in late afternoon.

And here is 3 seconds with slow water, also in the shade in very late afternoon.

Hope this helps.
Adding some type of water feature to the landscape can add an extra appeal. For those who are looking for something simple and even save money, consider solar fountain. These fountains require the power of the sun only to power it. This means you have more option to place them anywhere you like, since there is no need to worry about finding an outlet. All there is required is plenty of sun lights.
Solar fountains comes in many different sizes and shapes. Choosing one is based on your preferences. However, you will want to choose a fountain that will blend in with the surrounding and gives it a nice overall look. Another thing to consider is the location of the fountain. Since these are solar powered fountains, they will need a a solar panel to power them. The bigger the fountain, the large the solar panel will be. For this reason, you will want to place the fountain in places that other things such as trees and bushes will not obstruct the solar panel.
All of these fountains can be found at any garden center. Another option is to purchase fountains online. Online stores will usually have more selection of solar fountains to choose from than the local garden center. The only downfall to online purchase is the cost of shipping and handling. Depending on the size of the fountain, it can cost anywhere from $10 to $100 just for shipping and handling alone. However, there are some online stores that will offer free shipping. With over 50 online stores to browse through, you are sure to find a good deal and what you're looking for.
Solar fountains will usually come as a kit, everything you need to get started. Some of the items included in the kit are the fountain, pump, and wiring. These wiring are are used to connect the solar panel to the pump for it to operate. If you are planning to operate the fountain at night, you will need to get a rechargeable battery pack. These battery pack will recharge during the day and provide the power needed to operate the fountain at night.
Of course, the larger the fountain are, the more battery pack it will need. The place where you purchased the solar fountain from will be able to tell you how many battery pack you will need. Solar fountains are great for any landscape and will provide years of use. The best part of having a solar fountain is that it won't cost you any money to power them. So if you are in the market for a fountain, be sure to give solar fountain a look.
