Yes, your energy-efficient spiral bulb is CFL.

A 10 watt (consumed) CFL bulb will put out about the same light as a 40 watt light bulb. That's probably why they thought they were equivalent.

However the fixture doesn't care how much light is created. What matters is heat. The reason they don't want you to use more than a 40 watt incandescent bulb is that inc's get pretty warm. What they're saying is that an inc. bulb over 40 watts wouldn't be safe - it would overheat the fixture.

But an 18 watt CFL will use less than half the power and therefore will produce far less heat than a 40 watt inc. bulb (while emitting about as much light as a 75 watt inc.). So it shouldn't be a problem.

I think whoever wrote those recommendations is mistaken. They're confusing the light equivalence with heat equivalence. It isn't so. In fact the "energy efficient" nature of the CFL is all about producing far less heat, more light for the same power. Or the same light, and far less heat, for less power.

Sorry but this isn't even close to correct. Your AC line voltage varies by far more than a volt during the day. Anyway we're not talking about voltage variations.

When redecorating a room, don’t forget about your lighting. While it may seem that you will have to purchase all new lamps for your new décor, sometimes all you need is a new lampshade. Replacing a lampshade is a lot cheaper than purchasing a whole new lamp.

I find it is easier to wait until your major room components are in place before

selecting new lampshades. Let the theme of your new room eveolve, then select

lamp shades that either compliment or contrast with your theme. For example, a

wild safari room with a zebra rug on the floor, might be well-served by a simple

solid-color lamp shade to help offset the boldness of the rug. However, in a less

wild décor, such as a simple, clean, contemporary design, a bold lampshade would

add visual interest to the room. DonÂ’t be afraid to experiment!

Lampshades come in a variety of different shapes, textures, and materials. These

are your grandmotherÂ’s lampshades! Materials can range from paper, to fabric, to

natural materials like tree leaves, to fur, to plastic. And designs can range from sold

colors, to patterns, to abstract designs.

Before you head out to your lampshade store or place your order online for a

replacement shade, be sure to take a look at your current lampshade. Lampshades

come in a variety of different sizes (usually measured around the circumference of

the shade) and mounting styles. Some shades mount directly to the base lamps

while others mount to a support bracket that surrounds the bulb, while others still

clip directly onto the light bulb.

Be brave and daring with your choice of lampshades. They are easy to replace if you

hate your choice, but a simple lampshade can add that punch of drama to a room.

Are you just not getting spark?

could be computer, but try new plugs & plug wires and try disconnecting the wiring harness from the computer and applying dielectric grease (work the harness up & down, on & off several times before tightening back down)

For any electrical component to work properly, it must receive the correct current flow. Low current to a light bulb, for example, makes the light dim. Low current to a compressor clutch coil reduces the magnetic field and may allow the clutch to slip or not engage at all. For proper current flow to exist, the circuit must have the correct source voltage applied, and be free of any "unwanted" resistance in the circuit. And the best way to test this is to measure voltage drop with the circuit "working".

Here are the steps to take to perform a voltage drop test:

1. Connect your DVOM negative lead to the battery's negative post.

2. Connect your DVOM positive lead to the battery's positive post and measure its voltage. Record this reading.

3. Connect your DVOM positive lead to the positive side of the load being tested, as close to the load as possible.

4. Operate the circuit, and record your measurement.

5. Connect your DVOM positive lead to the negative side of the load being tested, as close to the load as possible.

6. Operate the circuit and record your measurement.

Let's take a closer look at these steps. First, we want to test the integrity of the ENTIRE circuit so placing your test leads at the battery is a must. You can make an extension lead for your DVOM so you can always connect to the battery ground terminal with your negative meter lead. Second, it is important to know the source voltage available. If the battery is weak to start with, your circuit is already working with a handicap. Even better is to measure source voltage with the engine running, and use that as your baseline.

In the third step, you are making sure all that source voltage is arriving at its ultimate destination...the load. Getting as close to the load as possible insures you are testing the entire path. On the positive side of the load, you should read within 0.50 volts of your source voltage, i.e. if you started with 14.56 volts you should read no less than 14.06 volts. This applies to most basic circuits. If you are diagnosing a control module related circuit, you may want to look for even less than that.

In step #5, you are looking for unwanted guests robbing your load downstream. Remember, all the voltage potential should have been used by the load. If you get a voltage reading of 0.50v or more here, there is someone else at home stealing potential from the primary component. This unwanted source may be ultimately found way "downstream" of the load, maybe even at the battery connection itself. Even so, it will still cause the voltage reading at the load to be over 0.50v. This is due to the available voltage being split proportionally between the two, and tends to throw techs new to voltage drop testing off. Remember, current flow is instantaneous throughout the circuit. Again, in the case of module related circuits, a little less is better. Stay as close to the load as you can to make sure you check the entire ground path.

Remember, current flow is only going to happen with the circuit turned on and working. Don't forget to operate the circuit when taking your measurements.

My Reading Is Out Of Range. Now What?

Experience is a guide here, as in all things. Typically, unwanted resistances are the result of poor grounds or poor connections, either in a harness connector or switch contact, and will result in an obvious, out of range measurement. To find the little unwanted guest, all you have to do is "backtrack" from your load back to the battery. Here, you will need to spend some time with a schematic for the circuit you are working on and use a little common sense. For example, if there are parallel branches on the circuit, are all branches affected? If so, focus on that section of wiring common to all. If not, focus on that section that is unique to the component you are diagnosing. Move back towards the battery at logical points (harness connections, switch contacts, splice points, etc.) until your DVOM reading is back to normal. That means you passed the unwanted guest and all you have left to do is narrow the search between your last two test points.

Some voltage measurement on the ground side of a working load is normal. If no ground exists at all, you will measure source voltage on both sides of the load. If the ground side measures 0.0 volts on the money, and the component is receiving correct source voltage, then the load likely has an internal open.

What if both sides of the load test just fine, but it still doesn't work right? If you tested right at the load, there is only one area left untested...the load itself. In this case, you most likely have a failed component. A good example of this is a solenoid that is failed mechanically, not electrically.

Remember, too, to not take shortcuts in your initial tests. It is vitally important that you test the entire path the current is taking from and back to the battery. A common mistake is to use a chassis ground under the dash when testing inside the car. But don't forget, that chassis ground point still has to make it back to the battery, typically through a few more connections, before the ground path is complete. That inoperative HVAC module could be simply a bad connection at the bulkhead connector or firewall ground eyelet, and you'll miss it if you cut corners. Done properly, a voltage drop test will quickly isolate which side of the circuit has the problem, and save you diagnostic time in the process.

solar powered heating source?

ok so ive got crickets in my backyard in 50l containers (for food for my reptiles) im currently breeding them. i need to give them heat at night . so if i got a solar pannel, copper wire and a light bulb and connected it somehow would it work at night? or could their be another thing i could use? if so plz tell me.

You would need a battery to store the energy gained by the solar panel during the day, and release it at night. You'd also need to make sure the bulb works properly with a DC current (incandescants do)

Another option, if it's Sunny enough, is to make your own solar heater from black tubes filled with water with some mirrors set up around it (tin foil will do if you don't want to spend much). Water has a high heat capacity and will maintain heat for a while.

During the night, move the foil closer around the water tubes/bottles. This will reduce heat escaping out from them, just like insulation.

If you live in a warm area with lots of direct sunlight, then this is worth trying out...

In all honesty, it'll probably be much easier, cheaper & more effective to run a wire out to the back and use mains electricity.

Finally, insulation is important!

Wall Light Lighting

connecting the ground on a wall light fixture?

I just bought a new light fixture and replaced an old one on my wall. The new fixture had three wires, hot, neutral, and ground and I connected them fine. It also had on the mounting bracket a screw that you could attach the ground too. In the diagram it showed a separate wire from the light fixture going to this screw which I didn't have on my light so I assumed it was not necessary. The fixture works but one bulb burned out the first day and I am wondering if it could have something to do with that ground. The other wires are attached properly and securely.

Not connecting the ground wire would not effect a bulb burning out. It sounds like you either had a bad light bulb to start, or there is something wrong with the socket. I would replace the bulb first, and if you have any other problems with the fixture return it to the store where it was purchased. Many local lighting showrooms have a 1 year warranty on their products!

An easy and affordable way to upgrade your residential lighting fixtures is to change from incandescent bulbs to Ceiling Fan Lights in your existing lamps. One compact fluorescent light (CFL) can pay for itself in the first 6 months, and then go on to save around $30 in light bills over its lifetime. CFLs use 75 percent fewer watts than a filament-dependent bulb, and can keep working approximately 10 times longer.

CFLs use significantly less electricity because of the way they make light. Incandescent bulbs use a current which runs across a wire filament and heats that filament until it begins to glow. That golden filament glow is the source of incandescent light. Alternately, a CFL drives an electric current into a tube filled with argon and mercury vapor. The power heats the gas, which next heats a fluorescent layer inside the tube. That very excited coating is the source of the visible fluorescent glow. CFLs require somewhat more power when they are just turned on, which is why these light bulbs contain a ballast to activate the CFL and then regulate the power level to keep light on.

The mercury mixture inside a compact fluorescent bulb is necessary for it to glow, yet mercury is a dangerous material that a person should not allow to contaminate a house or the environment. How could we successfully address this issue? Well, for starters, CFLs contain only approximately 4 miligrams of mercury per bulb, and this mercury won’t be released from the bulb as long as they are intact or being used. Actually, the only time that mercury might be released from the bulb is if the bulb gets broken, in advance of or during the discarding process, that's why you need good Ceiling Light Fixtures.

As long as consumers are observing proper cleanup and disposal methods when dealing with CFLs, the level of electricity saved particularly makes up for any theoretical harm to the planet. The single point of using less electricity means that using CFLs can reduce the level of mercury that is produced by power plants. For that matter, if every American household switched just one incandescent bulb with a CFL, the resultant electricity conserved would be enough to light 3 million households.

Used CFLs need to be thrown out employing existing county recycling programs. If your nearest landfill does not offer a recycling program for these bulbs, then busted or burnt out bulbs need to be wrapped in two plastic bags and secured in an outdoor trash can to await pickup.

The initial price tag on a Ceiling Fan Light Fixtures is considerably higher than the price of an incandescent bulb, yet the long service life and the projected energy savings easily make up for the price difference. CFLs use mercury, which might be harmful to the ecosystem, but if used and disposed of properly, the environmental impact of the mercury is insignificant when measured against the electricity conservation potential. By and large, the benefits of using CFLs far outweigh the potential downsides, so why not change your old bulbs for fluorescent ones? Tonight?

In order to have a successful poultry, and more specifically chicken, operation, it is essential that you have the proper housing and equipment for your birds. I guarantee, if you follow the tips I have lined out in my previous articles, you will find your new venture much more enjoyable, and much more successful. Since you have begun the journey, let's continue with chicks...now the fun begins!

Chicks require quite a bit of attention and care, therefore you must be ready for their arrival. Make sure the "brooder" or new home is ready, whether it be a sturdy cardboard box or an elaborate set-up. You will need plenty of clean bedding (plenty, because for little critters, they poop a lot and make a mess!), chick feeders, chick waterers, and a heat source.

Bedding: Bedding can be wood shavings or straw which needs to be at least 2 inches thick. I prefer the wood shavings, as these little guys and gals will start "scratching" the moment they touch the ground! This bedding needs to stay as clean and dry as possible...so, you will be cleaning your brooder on a regular basis!

Heat: As far as heat goes, chicks need an environment with a temperature of approximately 90 degrees for the first week of life. You may drop the temperature in your brooder 5 degrees per week as the chicks get bigger and stronger. Many people use a heat lamp which is suspended approximately 24 inches above the brooder floor. This lamp should have 250 watt bulb, although I have heard of folks using a 100 watt light bulb. In any case, the lamp should be suspended above the center of the brooder so that the chicks have ample opportunity to get away from the heat if they need to. Ideally, the coolest spot in your brooder should be no less than 70 degrees. I have never used a heat lamp...just a wood stove for heat, and I have had great success in raising my chicks. The best way to tell if your chicks are doing okay is to watch them. If they are running, leaping, chirping, eating, etc., they are just fine...like all young things! A cold bird will be huddling, and a hot bird will be as far away from the heat source as possible. Adjust the temperature accordingly. Hey, if I can do it with a wood stove, and I admit, it's pretty tricky...you can do it!

Feeders and waterers. Special chick feeders and waterers are worth the initial investment, although a simple waterer can be made with a canning jar and plate. The most important thing is to keep both the feed and water free from contamination...good luck! You'll be replacing and cleaning both at frequent intervals! Chicks must have food and water as soon as you get them home or in their brooder. You may have to dip their beaks in the water to teach them how to drink and where to drink, but from then on, this should not be a problem. Always keep the feeders full and near the heat source so they will eat. I would HIGHLY recommend purchasing "chick start" which is feed that is specifically formulated for new chicks. You will feed this feed for approximately the first 7 weeks of life. Not only does it contain the proper protein percentage, but it also is medicated to prevent coccidosis. Coccidosis is caused by chicks ingesting feces...trust me, it's worth the investment. As time goes on, you can supplement the chick start with "scratch", which is basically a combo of corn, wheat and barley.

Raising "chicks" is probably the most difficult aspect of raising chickens. Once you get through the first initial weeks, you will feel more confident and secure about your operation. The best rule of thumb is to just use common sense. Your math is right. Solar today is not going to be cheaper powering just your gaming computer, compared to grid electricity.

A modern computer is a special case, because it has a switching power supply generally capable to accepting a wide range of input voltages. So if you had an array putting out 150 to 330 volts DC, you could probably hook your computer up to it directly, no inverter required.
