How do you make a string of LED lights for an outdoor Christmas light display?
Radio shack sells packs of LEDs, but how do I make them light up? I don't know much about electronics. Learned right away that they aren't like light-bulbs that light up by going directly from a battery to the bulb.
i agree with botoboto buying a string of pre-made christmas lights will be much easier, if you are interested in understanding electronics grab a introductory book and work your way up this will save you lots of money by avoiding big mistakes
The holidays are nearly here and if you're like many people all over the world, you'll be inviting guests including friends and family to your homes for holiday festivities and cheer. If you are in the Northern hemisphere, your guests will more than likely either be arriving or leaving in the dark.
If you live in a warm climate year round, installing low voltage outdoor path lighting will be easier than for someone living in a colder climate, but for those of us living in cold, rainy or snowy and icy climates, this is not impossible. In fact, if you don't already have path lighting in place to your door, or at least an acceptable outdoor light at your front door, you will make it treacherous for your guests to visit with you.
If you have an outdoor 120v receptacle already installed outside, you can easily install outdoor low voltage path lights to your door. You don't need lots of them and they do not need to be overly bright, in fact you don't want them to create lots of glare blinding your guests and neighbors. A low voltage outdoor lighting solution will include a transformer to convert the 120 volts to a safe to work with and fully adequate 12 volts to power your path lights.
Watt for watt, Low voltage lights are brighter than incandescent bulbs. They last longer, with the halogen bulbs typically lasting 2,000 to 4,000 hours up to the high-pressure sodium bulbs which can last as long as 24,000 hours. Low voltage lighting kits can be a convenient solution, but remember that they are not expandable because they are designed to only supply enough power to the lights in the kit and usually come with less expensive and durable 16-gauge wiring. These kits are a good solution for someone with a very short pathway because with 16-gauge the lights will dim the further they get away from the transformer.
However, installing low voltage outdoor lighting is easy enough for the do-it-yourselfer. If you don't feel like you have the skills or the time, I'm sure you can find a family member or friend to come over and help you do it or even do it for you in exchange for a wonderful meal. Let the festivities begin!
Before purchasing your path lighting fixtures, be sure to spend some time planning your installation. You can get this done in a couple of hours. To get an accurate measure of your yard, use a 100 foot tape measure to measure the exterior dimensions of your house and then the measurements from your house to your boundaries on all sides. Then measure your pathways in the same way. You can transfer these measurements to 1/4 inch square graph paper with each 1/4 inch representing 1 foot.
Most often path lights are "downlights," so you don't have to think a lot about that, but you will find a beautiful selection of them to choose from. To help with your choice assess whether your yard is formal or informal, what kinds of finishes would look best with your home's colors and how well will your path lighting match any other lighting you already have in place? Would you prefer bollard lights closer to the ground? Are there any trees, rocks or shrubs you'd like to highlight close to your pathway?
You are well on your way to insuring a safe holiday season for you, your family and any guests you invite over for holiday cheer. And, as an extra bonus, you'll get to show off your beautiful new path lights.
