I need to buy an outdoor hanging pendant light for a portico. How do I determine the correct size to buy?
I have 27" room (from the point on the ceiling where I will hang the light to the top of the doorway.) Pendant light sizes range from 10" up to over 20". I dont want it to look too small or too big for the doorway. Most of the ones I like are around 15". Will that look too big?
I think it's a preference thing. Try this, make a card board model approx the size you like and hang it from the ceiling with string. That way you can get an idea of the dimensions and whether it will look right. Cheaper than buying a fixture and then not liking it.

So we are having an outdoor evening wedding and outdoor reception in late September. My color scheme is black and white with maroon accents. We really want the elegant feel but still keep it semi casual. Outdoor Hanging Pendant Cover for a pendant light cord?
Attention all of you gardeners and decorators out there,
I have an outdoor pendant light I would like to hang on my patio. The problem is that the cord is so unsightly. Any ideas on what I can do to cover it? I tried to put chain over it but the plug is too big to fit through the chain and I'm not an electrician so I don't want to attempt any wiring. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
You may want to try weaving the cord through a chain that way it will help disguise the ugliness of the cord. It's not the most ideal solution, but it will help eliminate some of the ugliness without having to rewire anything. You can get thicker chains to help fit your pendant's cord.
has anyone installled a 'UL damp' hanging lantern outdoors under a patio cover or trellis in california? there are not that many choices in 'UL wet' hanging lanterns.
I highly doubt it will be a significant problem. It would be better if it were a covered patio, rather than trellis. Of course UL wouldn't reccommend this installation. You might see the life of the lantern reduced.
The only one I readily found was the Kichler Lighting 9894. It is wet location listed. However, I don't know what your budget is.
If you're in southern california you probably have less to worry about than northern california.

Don't try driving nails with your hammer, because you might hurt yourself or chip out a chunk of the concrete or brick.
You will need a hammer drill to drill a neat clean hole for the masonry anchors. Get a masonry hammer-drill bit that is the same diameter as the masonry anchor which you will be using. The hammer drill can be rented from Loews, Home Depot or various tool rental places. The hammer drill will drill through the concrete or brick like cutting through butter. Once you have drilled the holes and set the anchors, you can fasten your rug with screws into the anchors.
