AAaarrgghh! Why does the chain keep falling off my chainsaw?

It's one of those chainsaw-on-a-stick deals. I don't have the manual- I bought it used. I pull the chain as tight as I can around the saw and tighten the bolts. If I'm really lucky, I get through a half-dollar size branch before the chain falls off again. Please help!

there should be probably two bolts that hold the bar onto the saw. put your chain around the bar and around the drive sprocket. finger tighten the two, maybe three, bolts that hold the bar on. now, probably on the other side of the bar on the chainsaw body itself---probably sitting right in the middle of the bar is a chain adjustment screw. with the main bolts just finger tight, turn this adjusting screw to the right--clockwise---to tighten up your chain. what this screw does is pull the bar out away from the drive sprocket.

don't overdo it---keep an eye on the chain as you turn the screw to the right. there should be enough slack in the chain so that you can grab it about midway on the bottom of the bar and pull it down about a quarter to a half inch. once you get the screw set where the chain is reasonably tight, finish tightening up the bolts that hold the bar onto the saw.

it kinda sounds like you are missing the chain tightener or it isn't hooked up right. take a look at your chainsaw and make sure the chain tension screw is there and working. if your chain tensioning screw is missing the chain will work loose rather quickly and fall off the bar.

also make sure your oil reservoir is full so that you can keep the chain oiled.

what you may want to do is google the manufacturer of the saw and see if you can download a manual---a lot of places have manuals in Adobe pdf files that you can download for free.

Can automotive car oil be used as an alternative for bar/chain oil for a chain saw?

I have a pole saw at the house i use around once a year with a small tank on the side that takes bar/chian oil. After using it once the rest of the oil just leaks out over the rest of the year sitting.Can i use automotive oil as a chain and bar lube alternative so i dont have to keep buying chain/bar oil?

That's what I use in my Remington electric pole saw, I've had it for years and it's still perfect. The manual for mine actually said that I could use motor oil. I'd go for it if I were you. After all, it isn't like you're putting it to heavy use. As far as draining the reservoir to save the oil, on my saw that would be a royal pain.

Problems with cutting down tree?

So I need to cut this tree down in the back year, it's huge, it's like 5 feet around. So I go up and buy a saw...it doesn't work because it's a hack-saw..opps that didn't work. So I buy another "electric" saw but the blade only goes 5 inches, it's a jig saw...it hardly made a dent. So I buy an ax...damn it wore me out...finally neighbor say's I need a chain saw, so I buy one from sears...well it came down today. Problem is the cut is about 4 feet off the ground (have to cut again) and when it fell it took down some power lines..now the electric is finally up again..the dum a** power company didn't get out here for an hour. And it took most of the neighbors fence out and hit their car...sh*t...they are really mad at the tree.

hummm well lets think about this for a min!!!!..damn a tree 5 feet around WOW!!! must have been a tall tree!!! so here I am wondering if the tree was so big what made you think a 5 inch saw would do any good?? just wondering.. I mean I am a girl and hell I could figure out use a BIG saw.. oh yeah and well I might have actually called a tree service seeing that I knew the tree was far to big for me to do.. maybe a NICE case of wine...and well good thing that you have insurance so you can pay for the repairs on the neighbors car.. OUCH!!! yep I dare to say your not going to the neighborhood BBQ!!! BUT what a GREAT story.. and here I thought I was the only one that had a husband that would do things like that.. HA HA HA!!!!

There should be two screws near the chainsaw chain on the bar. You can tighten these screws to control the tension on the belt. When the chain saw is off and unpluged (make sure it's not hot) the you should only be able to pull the chain up a little so that you can see the teeth slightly without pulling it off. Use the screws to control the tension. The chainsaw will loosen overtime, so you will have to tighten it frequently.

You should load bar and chain oil into the oil container. There should be a black pump button near the handle at the top. You can use this to pump oil onto the chain as you cut. Do this frequently. This reduces friction and will help with the problem.

Consult your manual about the oil and tension control for your model.

Chain saw chains do stretch, however not as far that it is out of the adjustment area of the chain saw. It is either the wrong chain or we are talking about a chain that should have been chucked "years ago". 40 hours is nothing. So there is something you are not understanding in the chain tightening department.
Stop by a chainsaw shop and ask them the correct procedure on tightening a chain and how tight it is suppose to be. Too tight is no good either.
You cannot remove links.
The proper tightness is when you grab the chain after sharpening (in the middle of the bar) and lift it upward so that the weight of the chainsaw pulls down on it. The bottom of the chain should "just about clear the chain groove track"when looking at it from the side. No looser, no tighter. That allows for the tightening of the chain (when it gets into a heated cut) and still being loose enough to allow the chain to rotate around to do cutting. Heating mainly happens due to lack of lubricant on the bar or/and a dull chain.
I have seen people tighten the chain up so there was nearly no clearance, so when it did heat up, the chain seized on the bar.

Maintaining your chainsaw parts in good working order means performing regular maintenance on your saw.

Too many chainsaws run their race too early because of lack of maintenance when some simple checks following regular use could have well helped to extend the life of a machine. Badly maintained parts can compromise a person's safety.

Major manufacturers do their best to promote maintenance of chainsaw parts to their customers as it not only saves them unnecessary expense but also plays a big part in keeping the user from getting into trouble from a safety angle.

Husqvarna and Stihl for example provide a ton of information on chainsaw maintenance and safety but they can do very little once the customer buys a saw and heads home with it.

Let's take a look at some of the important areas of a saw which require regular checks following use.

The Chain

The chain is obviously one of the most worked parts of a chainsaw. Maintaining it in good order means longer use of your machine and limits safety issues.

Sharpening the chain is an important part of good chain maintenance. Experienced users will know the drill but inexperienced owners are well advised to seek the help of a professional. Chain sharpening requires the sharpening the cutting teeth as well as the depth guages between them.

Watch the length of the cutting teeth as once they are below at least 4mm, the chain will need to be replaced. When placing the new chain on the saw, you'll need to set the right tension because a loose fitting chain can easily slide of while a tight fitting chain can have ramifications on the bar.

Other Chainsaw Parts

While a good working chain is paramount to any saw delivering top performance other parts of the chainsaw such as the clutch, brake, air filter, bar and flywheels all need regular checking.

Lubrication is another issue. Again this concerns the chain and a non-lubricated chain can have a serious domino effect on the well being of other chainsaw parts which in turn will lead to safety issues.
