Power for 100 RGB LEDS?
Im am currently making a project where i need 100 or 50 (depending on available power) to work from 1 controller. Will this controller have enough power to power 100 RGB leds.
Controller: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Wireless-FullColor-Ambient-IR-Controller-RGB-LED-Strip_W0QQitemZ120341325524QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_HomeGarden_Lighting_Lamps_Lighting_SM?hash=item120341325524&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1688%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318
The leds will be linked in parallel on 1 long string, would his work.
Controller: 5 amps per channel /8 max 12V
Leds RGB: 0.20 MA x 100 or 50
any help would be appreciated
Also can anyone suggest a good power supply that could provide the power to the controller.
2 amps required per 100 LED's. So you could safely put 100 on each channel, or even 150 per channel since that would be 3 amps x 2 = 6 amps total.
Design considerations: Be sure the LEDs that you choose are rated for at least 14V each @ 20 ma. Why? Safety factor.
For the p.s., any p.s. that has the current and voltage rating for the controller which would be 8A @ 12V will work. Sir, that is A LOT OF CURRENT!
The supply you choose has to meet the controller input requirements.
Anyway, so you want a p.s. that will provide at least 10A @ whatever the controller input voltage is, for safety factor. You never want to push your supply to the limit. You have to have some extra in there for losses and temperature variations.

What are the differences between Common Cathode, Common Anode, and Manual Control LED`s?
Looking to build a RGB strip for a light controller (7 color fade, flash... lol). But not sure what LED i`m supposed to be leaning towards... never heard of the term Manual Control LED before now.
Diodes (of which LED's are one type) conduct electricity in only one direction. In the other direction, it stops any electrical flow unless the voltage is so high that it breaks down the diode, damaging it..
So, to get an LED to light up, you need to apply a positive voltage to the anode, and ground to the cathode. Or if you apply ground to the anode, then you must apply a negative voltage to the cathode.
With a modular LED array, you're going to apply switches to one end, to individually control each LED in the array, while the other end will share the common return wire. If you're working with a positive power supply, then you need a Common Cathode array since they will all share the same ground return.
Conversely, if you using a negative voltage, then that will need to be fed individually to each cathode as needed, and the Common Anode will be the shared ground return.
LED's are not, by nature, manually nor automatically controlled. It's the switching circuits designed to address the LED's that will either be automatic or manual. There may be some IC chips that include control circuitry for LED's, but they would be manual (for simplicity of flexibility) unless you design the extra supporting automatic circuitry to augment them.
Flexible LED strips are widely used as decorative lighting. You may find them in many areas, such as car and motorcycle decorative lighting, architectural decorative lighting, archway lighting, hallway lighting, stairway lighting, cove lighting and so on. They are easy to install and cut every 5-10cm. Besides, LED is energy saving, eco-friendly and long lifespan. Thereby LED strips also have these features. The lifespan is over 50,000 hours.
Main features:
1. LED. The light sources are usually SMD LED. 3528 SMD LED and 5050 SMD LED. The brightness of each types of LED is different. 5050 SMD LED is brighter than 3528 SMD LED. Usually, RGB LED strips are made by 5050 SMD LED.
2. Colors. The color can be white, warm white, red, blue, green, pink, RGB and so on. The price is different in different colors.
3. Quantity of LED. Usually the quantity of LED is 15PCS, 24PCS or 30PCS per 50cm. It also influences the brightness.
4. Length. In most of case, the length is 50cm. There are also 30cm, 60cm and 80cm length. However, you do not need to worry about it. Usually, every LED strip can be cut every 3 LED. That's 5-10 cm.
5. Waterproof or non-waterproof. Waterproof or non-waterproof are both available.
6. Working Voltage. Usually working voltage is 12V DC.
7. Power Consumption. Usually power consumption is from 2.4W to 3.6W every 50cm.
The above features are main factors. For more features, you may contact your suppliers.
How to Choose right LED strips in your project
After we know the above 7 main features, it's easy to choose right products in you project. You just need to tell your supplier the following requirements:
1. Colors. If you need RGB colors, you need a controller to control the colors.
2. Brightness(Luminous Intensity, Flux or other in your descriptions )
3. Waterproof or non-waterproof. If you need waterproof products, IP rating is also a factor.
4. Length. If you a very long strip in your project, you need a amplifier to keep the effect.
5. Input voltage. Usually you need a transformer to transform the voltage.
The above 5 factors are important to both your project and price. You may take more requirements in your project into consideration.
